PS Ryde Auction

On the 16th June, the solid brass lever console for the Ryde's massive engines is going under the hammer at the Island Auction Rooms.
Proceeds from the sale are to be used towards the Boiler Appeal for Monarch, as we are looking to raise £15,000 for a replacement which will lower the ship's carbon footprint whilst also giving her more steam to cope with the challenges of Cowes Harbour more effectively. Until a new boiler can be purchased, she will be restricted to the Upper Medina, departing from Old Town Quay in Newport.

The lever console dates from 1937 and was commissioned by William Denny & Bros. When the Ryde was in active service, an engineer would have stood at it to control the entire ship by command of the Master from the bridge.

Not only is the item considerably rare, but it also has a mistake on it-which makes it unique to the Ryde.

It is hoped that the national publicity from being a part of such a well watched show will encourage visitors to the Island, raise awareness of the PS Ryde and help the Monarch kick start the arduous task of fundraising for the boiler.

Monarch has now had approximately £70,000 spent on refitting the boat and getting her into service. Without this and the support of the Friends, we could never have got the vessel working as well as she does now.
